The next VMA election takes place in Nov. 2017. There will be several vacancies on the board due to retirement and changing circumstances. The VMA depends on its Board of Directors to provide guidance for the organization, to set policies, and to respond to changing conditions. The VMA has members involved in a wide variety of musical activities so prospective board members need to have an interest in representing not just their own constituencies but the entire membership as a whole.
Experience in the following areas will be an asset:
- financial,
- governance,
- website,
- marketing/social media
The VMA is inclusive and welcomes anyone who is dedicated to learning about the organization and is prepared to devote his or her time and attention to its governance. The board meets monthly, for which the board members are paid $ 80 per meeting plus 14% pension. This compensation is really only an honorarium when considering the workload and responsibility board members take on but there is also a lot of satisfaction in being involved with an organization that represents Vancouver’s professional musical community. We have a current membership of 1900 widely diverse and talented people.
It is not too early to consider running for the board. If you would like to know more about the duties of board members or would like to attend a board meeting to get a better sense of what is involved please contact me dbrown@vma145.ca or any another VMA board member.
